Dr. Trang Si Trung is the new Rector and project director of the NORHED project “Incorporating Climate Change into Ecosystem Approaches to Fisheries and Aquaculture Management in Sri Lanka and Vietnam” at Nha Trang University.
The project is a cooperation between Nha Trang University in Vietnam, Ruhuna University in Sri Lanka, the University of Bergen and the Norwegian College of Fishery Science at the Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø.
The aim of the project is to increase competence in Vietnam and Sri Lanka on the vulnerability of coastal communities and ecosystems to climate change, and develop responsive management mechanisms for fisheries and aquaculture to meet these challenges.
An important component in the project is the Female Professorship Mentoring Program which aims to qualify female staff to Professors. At present, there are nine Associate Professors at Nha Trang University, out of which only one is female. Norwegian project coordinator, Professor Claire Armstrong, was part of a similar career development program which led to her Professorship at the Fishery College in Tromsø.
An international master program in Marine Ecosystem based management and Climate Change has been developed by the project partners. The project coordinator from University of Ruhuna, Oscar Amarasinghe, has been involved in curriculum development and teaches on the program. It is the first master program in English where Nha Trang University is the degree awarding institution.
The NORHED project supports competence building of academic staff at Nha Trang University and Ruhuna University through PhD and Post Doc fellowships. Project coordinator Nguyen Thi Ngan reveals that all five PhD fellows are females. There are three female and two male Post-docs in the project.
